As you all know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I’m sure we’ve all known someone very near and dear to us that have been impacted by this terrible disease. In my family, it not only touched one woman, but two. My Aunt and my Mother. When my Aunt got breast cancer I was very young. I remember her in good spirits and being very honest with me about the affects of her chemotherapy treatments. She survived and is still surviving 🙂
When my Mother got breast cancer, it was different. At the time, I was an adult, my Dad had passed away (also of cancer) a couple of years before, and I knew exactly what it was when she called me and told me that “I needed to come over” and that she needed to “talk to me”. I immediately braced myself and went over to her house..thankfully we live right down the street from each other. I walked in and waited for her to tell me what I already knew. She had found a lump on her breast that day. Later on we were to find out that she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I couldn’t believe it. How can a woman who has been the most amazing, hardest working, business minded, smartest, and craziest at times, be stricken with this disease? That was in August 2013. Since then she has been a fighter. She has had incredible care at Duke Hospital, and has been taking so much care of herself physically..she LOVES tennis. In fact she is chairing the Susan G Komen Tennis Social this year at Highland Country Club. She also has had an amazing group of friends who support her and love her. I really couldn’t be happier for her outcome, and the fact that I have many more years with this crazy lady 🙂
